See my latest article on the China challenge to America’s historic dominance in space. We must recognize NASA’s storied accomplishments and the need to support NASA funding. For those of us in So AZ, UArizona has a long history with NASA, having been a part of every planetary mission since 1964, producing jobs and economic growth. This includes the 2007 Phoenix Mars Lander, the first university-led mission to Mars, which had an economic impact of $120M+. UA’s current mission, OSIRIS-REx, is the first US asteroid sample return effort with an est. economic impact in AZ of $235M. I watched the launch of OSIRIS REx from Kennedy Space Center in Sept. 2016 with awe. (Note that ASU also has an asteroid mission- NASA’s Psyche).
As Americans we can be proud of NASA and our nation’s achievements in space–as Arizonans we should also recognize what UArizona has done both in space and for jobs right here on the ground.
